Level Up

Level Up is our school year program that’s all about leveling up as a leader and as an individual. Level Up connects participants with mentors, resources, tools, and workshops that help them achieve their goals and freedom dreams. Level Up runs from September through May annually. 

Level Up offers a monthly pro-social event, open to all young Black men in the community including current Word is Bond ambassadors and participants who are not in Word is Bond. Each event offers academic support, dinner, and a pro-social activity. Each event includes a discussion on a specific leadership skill participants can practice in their everyday lives.

Activities include guest speakers, mentor nights, trips to local sporting events, movie nights, as well as an annual ski trip to Mt. Hood in the spring. All Level Up events are free to young Black men in seventh grade through high school.

Level Up hosts different events each month for free is open to young Black men ages 13-19 in the Portland Metro Area. To sign up, contact executive director Lakayana Drury at lakayana@mywordisbond.org

 

Past Events

The Word is Bond Monthly Leadership Meetings are a chance for young Black men to connect and meet new friends, build leadership skills, and participate in social activities. Each month features a different theme and focus. The leadership meetings are open to Black males in high school in Portland and surrounding cities. Register for the meeting here.

October Theme:

Black like Me - This workshop will focus on what it means to be a young Black professional. You will meet Black male professionals from a variety of backgrounds and career fields and get a chance to hear their stories to success, learn tips to find your passion and map your future, network, and discuss important topics like mental health, financial planning, and overcoming challenges in your life
